City of Naples settles federal fair housing lawsuit with group that helps homeless veterans

Two years of wrangling that included a federal lawsuit between the city of Naples and a nonprofit group that provides housing to homeless veterans is over.

A settlement in the case means Wounded Warriors of Collier County can have up to seven unrelated veterans live at 1361 Fifth Ave. N. in the River Park neighborhood.

The nonprofit leases the single-family home as a recovery residence for homeless veterans with mental health or substance abuse issues, or both, so they can gain stability in their lives, according to Dale Mullin, the nonprofit’s president.

He said he is pleased the city of Naples settled his group’s lawsuit, which said the city was discriminating against Wounded Warriors by denying a reasonable accommodation request for disabled veterans under fair housing laws, according to the lawsuit.
