KAISER POLL: THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC IS UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL –
Almost one in ten Americans say a family member or close friend has died of a painkiller overdose, 25 percent say a close relation has been addicted and 2 percent of Americans admit to having been addicted themselves, according to a new Kaiser Family Foundation poll. The findings come as the CDC prepares to release new prescribing guidelines early next year to encourage doctors to scale back their use of the drugs. Whites and younger and middle-aged Americans are more likely than black, Latino and older Americans to have a personal connection to prescription painkiller abuse. Half of Americans say addressing the problem should be a top priority for state officials, and large majorities support a number of steps to help. Eighty-five percent favor treatment programs, about 80 percent favor public education programs, training doctors and monitoring their prescribing habits.
