With 3.5 days left in the 2014 Florida Legislative Session, any attempt to regulate the sober home “industry” appears to be over.
The House passed HB 479 last week, but its “companion” bill, SB 582, was markedly different. SB 582 also was not heard by Appropriations which legislation “died in committee.”
HB 479 was sent over to the Senate to try to get that body to hear the bill and adopt the same measure so that it could go onto the Governor.
However, it appears no companion bill will be heard and therefore no action taken this year.
That said, there is rumor that the State Drug Policy Advisory Council, which exists pursuant to s. 397.333, Fla. Stat,. could be utilized to review this year’s attempt at legislation and determine how to move forward. The Council includes the State Attorney General, as well as the State Surgeon General, amongst others.
To be continued.
